Scholarships and Awards

Various scholarships and awards are available for prospective and current students supervised by Institute faculty.

Western Space is offering Experiential Learning Opportunities funding for students that are currently enrolled in the collaborative Specialization in Planetary Science and Exploration program.

In addition, Western’s planetary science graduate program attracts top calibre students, who hold numerous major scholarships, including Trillium, NSERC, and Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships. Below is a list of external funding opportunities that students are encouraged to investigate:

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program is jointly funded between the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and matched funding through donations to The University of Western Ontario. The Ontario Graduate Scholarships are designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies at the master's and doctoral levels.

Canada Graduate Scholarship - Master's

The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships - Master’s Program (CGSM) is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. The CGSM Program supports 2,500 students annually in all disciplines and is administered jointly by Canada’s three federal granting agencies.

NSERC CGS Doctoral Award

The NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships-Doctoral (PGS D) Program provides financial support to high-calibre students who are engaged in doctoral programs in the natural sciences or engineering. This support allows these students to fully concentrate on their studies and to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields.

Vanier Scholarship Program

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both superior leadership skills and an outstanding record of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and/or humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health. International and domestic candidates are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier CGS.

NSERC USRA Undergraduate Student Research Awards

Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) are meant to stimulate undergraduate students interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering. They are also meant to encourage students to undertake graduate studies and pursue a research career in these fields. If you would like to gain research work experience that complements your studies in an academic setting, these awards can provide you with financial support.
