Adjunct Research Associate

Dr. Joel Brown is a family physician and clinical leader based in rural southwestern Ontario, where he provides comprehensive primary care and leads quality improvement initiatives at the Bluewater Area Family Health Team. His work sits at the intersection of health, environment, technology, and systems design, with a particular focus on how place, climate, and infrastructure shape human health.

Dr. Brown’s research and scholarly interests centre on health equity, health systems resilience, and the use of digital tools to improve access to care for underserved and remote populations. He is especially interested in how environmental conditions, geographic isolation, and resource constraints affect both individual health outcomes and the sustainability of care systems. This perspective is informed by his clinical experience in rural Canada and previous practice in the UK, as well as his ongoing Master of Public Health studies in Global Health.

His recent academic work includes research on telehealth services for displaced and marginalized populations, exploring how technology can reduce barriers created by distance, instability, and limited local resources. He brings a systems-thinking lens to questions of human adaptation, resilience, and wellbeing in changing environments—areas that align closely with the Institute’s interest in Earth systems, exploration, and the human experience.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Brown is actively involved in teaching, leadership, and health innovation. He is committed to translating research into practical, real-world applications that strengthen communities, support interdisciplinary collaboration, and promote equitable, sustainable approaches to health in complex environments.
